The thought behind this caution was that otherwise you would lose the opportunity to sell the same expertise over and over again to that and other clients. The best a client could hope to do was to hire some people from the service organization after the engagement and hope to transfer needed skills and knowledge that way.
Knowledge and skills become obsolete very rapidly now. Many such service organizations realize that they will have to add totally improved skill sets every few years. Under such circumstances, the chances to resell the same expertise to a client are more limited. If the client wants to learn those skills, that’s often a bigger assignment than merely applying the skills once for the client. As a result, more kinds of expertise can now be learned from state-of-the-art practitioners in service organizations.

So, here’s the thing…. If you want to raise your list building efforts to the next level, especially when you’re traveling and meeting people at conferences and such, find people in your niche. That’s the first thing. After that, you want to see approximately how big their lists are. See if you can hook up with people who have lists of two to three thousand people.
Once you find them, there are a couple of things you’ll want to do. First, you want to set up a cross-promo with them. If you can do it in that same week, that’s the best. Most Internet marketing people don’t have a lot of flexibility about when they can send out for someone else, like you will. And you need to put some pressure on.
If they seem interested, then you say, “I’ll promote you, if you’re willing to promote me. What do you think? If you can send out on Thursday and Friday for me, that would be great. I can do that, too. Let’s cross-promote each other’s products/services. If you send two of your emails to me, I’ll send two of mine to you to use. Let’s join each other’s affiliate programs, too. Then, you join each other’s affiliate programs. You may struggle to find that link, but you’ll get used to it. Affiliate programs are important to Internet marketing. Right now, what you need to do is to aim for people with lists that are comparable to your own because they have equal promoting power to you. When you cross-promote each other’s products or services, you’ll both be list building faster.
After they agree to do this, then you throw in another deal–a Golden Rule offer. You say to them, “You have a great product/service. How would you like some ongoing traffic?” Internet marketing is all about traffic, so you’ll usually get a, “Yes,” from them.
Then, you say, “I’ll do the one-time promotion for you, and I’ll also put two emails into my autoresponder series for you, if you’ll do the same for me.” You’ll be leveraging that one-time deal into continued list building and traffic for both you and your Golden Rule partner.
You’ll probably get the one-time deal nailed easily. Most people with small lists (under 10,000), are looking for that kind of thing because they know it’s a faster way to be list building, and that’s the key to Internet marketing. There are probably tons of people with lists comparable to your own who will help you because they need to be list building, too.
But most of the people you go to with the Golden Rule deal will never have heard about it because only my coaching students are aware of it. So say, “I’ll put two autoresponder messages into my system for you, so that you’ll get traffic forever from whoever joins my list.” Make sure you explain that the list building and traffic just don’t stop.
Joint ventures like this are really great for getting your list building onto the next level. You probably know some Internet marketing people who are about the same level as you are and have just started with list building. You’ll have a good shot of working with them because they need to be list building and selling their services or products, too.
