Simply communicate with professional people

You’ve probably heard it before, communication is key when it comes to building a client base. But if you are like many small business owners, you are probably feeling the pressures of too much to do, and not enough time to do it in. All too often, I hear from people that they know they should be connecting with clients more, but they don’t know how to fit it in to already jam packed schedules.

The thing to remember is, with a little planning and organization, you can be making regular contact with your clients and it doesn’t have to be another thing on your already jam packed to-do list.

One of the easiest things to do is organize your email program. Most email programs can be set up to give you alerts, weeks, days or even hours ahead of events. If you want to send out birthday cards for example, simply set your email program to remind you that an event is coming up and you won’t have an excuse for forgetting to do it. It only takes a second to send an E-card once your email program reminds you to do it.

If you are really short on time, you can hire a student part time to send out your correspondence. Take a few minutes to write out some short and sweet emails that part time staff can send out to clients just to touch base. By using an online organization system, or your email program for reminders, it’s just a simple matter or typing in email addresses, and a click of a button and you’ll be making instant contact with clients.

Remember to keep it simple. And start as you mean to go on. For example, maybe at the start of your business, when you don’t have as many clients, you will be able to maintain a monthly communication with them. But once your client base grows, do you really think that you’ll be able to keep up that level of frequency? Don’t over extend yourself, but once you start and set a precedent for yourself, you should do your best to stick to it or you may be seen as unreliable.

Staying involved with your clients by keeping up with regular communication will go along way to keep you in their thoughts. So when they need someone to perform a job for them, it will be you they think of.
